Tam’s Blog

Dear Mark,

I promise this laptop sleeve will be one of the least obnoxiously colored things I have made. And anyway, it will be better than wrapping the laptop in a dishtowel. Instead of the bright orange and pink yarns I would have used, how about these? I will have to get more yarn, but it will be grey or charcoal colored.

Here also a picture of what it may resemble. I like the handle, do you?

Baby Blanket

Published on September 27, 2005

I’ve been a little busy lately, too busy to post but not too busy to knit. Check out the new infant baby blanket. Knit in super yummy baby cashmerino, this pattern was found in Debbie Bliss’ book “Special Knits”. It’s for someone I haven’t met yet, but he’s on the way.

Here’s a little detail.

New Kitty!!

Published on August 19, 2005

Meet the brand new kitty! Karma (yeah, I know) is maybe 2-3 days old and is TEENY! Little Karma isn’t really strong enough to bottle feed so she is getting tube fed for now. Poor thing. She’ll be staying with us until she is weaned. Isn’t she cute?

This horrible sweater is tasking me…

Published on August 12, 2005

I finished a green raglan sleeve cardigaan about 2-3 years ago. I was very excited about it because it was the first sweater I knit where I used a yarn that had a different gauge than what the pattern called for. I modified the pattern just a bit and I successfully knit the sweater up to the patterns specifications. The first time I wore the sweater, I thought it was cute, after that first wearing the sweater got all stretched out and developed a distressing bell shape. The sweater WAS supposed to be a little bigger at the bottom, but this was just unattractive. I don’t know how much of my problem was the pattern itself and how much was the yarn I chose, but I finally decided that I had spent too much money on the yarn to just leave things the way they were. I ripped it apart.

I got a Debbie Bliss pattern book (Noro collection) and have decided to make this sweater.

Here is where I am at now with it…

all right, now. It was looking like I wasn’t going to have enough yarn to finish this, because when I finished the first sweater I gave the leftover yarn to a friend, but I turns out she still had it and was happy to give it back. But now I have another problem, for which I can only blame myself. I only sort of checked my gauge, which means I checked how many stitches I got to the inch but not how many rows. Turns out my rows are a lot shorter. As a result, this sweater’s sleaves are going to be too short, not to mention my belly button is going to be sticking out. I think I am going to adjust the pattern for the sleeves a bit and then knit a decorative border on the bottom of the sweater……any ideas?

Mark falls, Veggies bruised but ok

Published on August 4, 2005

So! We are unloading all of our organic veggie loot from the car after we get back from Vermont when Mark falls off of the broken step in our front yard. After our separate but equal, half-silent mutual freak-out (Mark doesn’t have insurance and it’s looking like he can’t walk), Mark is able to hobble into the house. We wiggle his foot out of his shoe only to find that his ankle is quickly doubling in size. At this point we considered taking him to the emergency room, but then calmed down and decided to consult that great doctor available to us all… the internet. It really does know everything. So I get some ice for his ankle, give him some naproxen, a pillow to elevate his foot and the laptop. What does the great internet say? It says: 1.) ice the injury to prevent/reduce swelling, 2.) Elevate limb 3.) use compression bandages, 4.) I forget 4… I hope it wasn’t too important cuz we are only doing the first 3. Really.

Old Shaw Farm - It’s in Vermont!!

Published on August 3, 2005

It’s been a busy coupla weeks and I’ve been having too much fun to post. The weekend before last Mark, Uther and I went to visit Peter, Maryellen and Wavy at their farm in Vermont. We had a great time. Bee working, swimming, walking, napping, play napping, veggie eating, touring the Dog chapel, playing with blocks, salsa making, tractor driving, and magazine reading were just a few of the activities we participated in. The Griffins are very busy running their organic vegetable farm this time of year, and I’m sure we kept them from their work a bit.

Maryellen and I worked her bees some. We took a beekeeping class together a couple of years ago, and she started her hive soon after we finished, and I had some hopes of starting one here in Brooklyn. (One of the beekeepers in our class has several hives in Manhatten. They are on the top of buildings near central park. I don’t think he’d had any trouble but he said that there were heavy fines if you were caught. If I remember correctly the fine is for harbouring a wild animal or something like that.) Anyway, Maryellen’s bees are thriving! We replaced a frame that was rotten and harvested a bunch of honey and wax (just from the bad frame).

You can go to Peter and Maryellen’s site and see more bee photos and also see what they are growing at Old Shaw Farm

Lounging on the Veranda

Julie and Charlotte are off flying around in sea planes in the San Juan islands, while the rest of us hang out in the shade in blistering, sweaty Brooklyn.

Here we have a handsome threesome. Gorgeous Dakota and her fancy fellas Uther and Angus.

There is a 50% chance that I have a gift for the next baby shower I attend.

I finished the cute blue baby sweater dress that is too small for any baby girls that I currently know. It has a lovely shell button; I may have mentioned that I love shell buttons.

Baby sweater

Published on July 11, 2005

I have been knitting a lot of baby sweaters lately, for two reasons really. The first is I want to have a baby, and the second is the instant gratification, you can knit a cute baby sweater in no time flat. Next one I do will be done in the round and then I won’t even have to sew it together when I’m finished. Here is a little blue vest/dress in light blue baby cashmerino, that I am still working on. This was supposed to be in a size 18-24 mo, but it looks smaller than that to me. I thought I could give this to my niece, but now that it’s nearing completion it doesn’t seem like it will be big enough. (I guess I’ll have to call my brother because I haven’t seen her since Turkey day, maybe she’s still teeny.)

Benny!!

Published on

Okay, before anyone gasps and cries “What did they do to that cat?” I have to give you a little of Benny’s history. Benny has had diarrhea for a very long time. When he came in, he had poo stuck in the creases on his face, and everywhere else too. He’s been cleaned up, but his diarrhea persists. We’ve tried just about everything, but are not quite ready to give up, because if we can’t cure the diarrhea we won’t ever be able to find a new home for him. He is really sweet and loves attention and food. (Who doesn’t?) If Uther didn’t have such a jealous little heart, and I didn’t mind having to clean diarrhea off the floor four or more times a day, he’d be coming home with me today.

Oh, the cone! He is wearing an e-collar in the photos because he got bit by one of our feisty kittens and has an abscess. (Was it you, Ruby?)
